2 in critical condition after grizzly bear attack involving students in remote B.C. community
Eleven people injured including four hospitalized after a grizzly bear attacked a school group during a hike; bear remained at large amid ongoing investigation, officials said.
- A grizzly bear attacked an elementary school class on Thursday, Nov. 20 in Bella Coola, British Columbia, injuring multiple people while the animal remains at large, prompting community warnings.
- The Year 4-5 class was walking on a trail near Highway 20 in the 4 Mile area when the bear appeared, officials said grizzly bears' seasonal behaviour increases aggression as they build fat stores before hibernation.
- According to Emergency Health Services spokesman Brian Twaites, paramedics treated four patients, two in critical and two in serious condition, while seven others were treated at the scene and a male teacher was airlifted.
- Acwsalcta School said it will remain closed Friday with counselling available, while the Nuxalk Nation and authorities urged residents to stay indoors as RCMP and B.C. Conservation Officer Service search for the "aggressive bear".
- Nuxalk Nation leaders said they are devastated and offered food, comfort, and counselling at youth centre and local support services amid grizzly bears' pre-hibernation behaviour in Bella Coola River Valley, about 700 kilometres northwest of Vancouver.
