2 House Democrats float idea of Blanche impeachment
Hank Johnson and Deborah Ross said Democrats could use their new Senate majority to pursue impeachment, citing DOJ actions and a possible 56-vote edge.
On Thursday, Rep. Hank Johnson and Rep. Deborah Ross voiced support for impeaching Attorney General Todd Blanche, citing his alleged efforts to undermine the rule of law.
Democrats won control of both the House and Senate two days earlier, and Ross said the party's newly won 56-member Senate majority could make removal proceedings more viable than previous efforts.
Blanche's leadership at the Department of Justice faces intense scrutiny following its reported intervention in Alaska's Senate election; Harmeet Dhillon, head of the Civil Rights Division, resigned Thursday amid criticism over her enforcement handling.
Ross suggested prioritizing an impeachment effort against Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth first, stating, "I think we should start with Hegseth," when discussing the legislative calendar.
Rep. Thomas Massie is spearheading an impeachment effort against Hegseth, with a vote potentially scheduled as soon as next week, signaling a shift in legislative strategy.
