2 Young Children Killed in New Jersey Boat Crash, Police Say

A 30-foot Tidewater Custom 280 collided with an Intercoastal Waterway channel marker at 9:09 p.m. on Sunday, July 19, ejecting a 9-year-old girl and 7-year-old boy into Barnegat Bay, New Jersey State Police said.
The children were aboard with their grandparents: boat operator Stephen Schneider, 63, of Bayville, and passenger Laurie Schneider, 64, also of Bayville, after the group visited MJ's Restaurant Bar and Grill before traveling the Intercoastal Waterway.
Schneider and Laurie Schneider found both children unresponsive in the water immediately after the collision and rushed them to a local hospital, where they were pronounced dead.
Officials confirmed the channel marker's lights were operational at the time, while Councilman James Byrnes observed a life jacket near one child during CPR efforts; the crash remains under investigation.
The incident marks the second fatal boat crash on Barnegat Bay this year, following Gunnar Pearson's death in a separate collision around Memorial Day.
