Brush Fire Breaks Out in Sorrento Valley; Evacuations Ordered
Fire crews responded with aircraft and helicopters as evacuation orders and warnings were issued for multiple zones, officials said.
A brush fire broke out Sunday in Sorrento Valley, rapidly expanding to 71 acres and prompting immediate emergency responses and evacuation orders for nearby residential zones.
The fire began around 1:30 p.m. Sunday near Penasquitos Creek, east of Interstate, expanding from approximately 6 acres to 71 acres between Sorrento Valley Boulevard and Carmel Mountain Road.
San Diego Fire-Rescue Department crews and Cal Fire San Diego deployed four fire engines, seven brush rigs, and multiple aircraft to the scene. Fixed-wing assets began responding within 40 minutes.
Officials issued evacuation orders for Zones SDC-1443, SDC-1492, SDC-1494, and SDC-1444. A temporary evacuation point opened at Mandell Weiss Eastgate Park for affected residents.
The blaze is spreading at a slow rate through medium fuels, and the San Diego Fire Department reported no structures currently threatened. Firefighters are proactively planning for structure protection as a precaution.
