Sewage Spill Causes Closure in Laguna Beach
Health officials said the closure will last at least 3 days until water quality tests meet acceptable standards.
Laguna Beach officials closed Thalia Beach on Thursday, July 2, 2026, following a 2,000-gallon sewage spill, with the closure extending a quarter-mile upcoast and downcoast of Anita Street.
A fitting on a bypass line dislodged after a contractor left a construction site, Dave Kiff, city manager, said, causing the main sewer line pump to release wastewater Thursday evening.
Surfer Rahul Keswani reported an "awful sewage smell" at the coast, where officials posted signs advising swimmers to "KEEP OUT," as the Orange County Health Care Agency assesses water quality.
The affected area will remain closed for at least three days until results "meet acceptable standards," health officials said, while beachgoers were seen turning away Friday as the holiday began.
No other closures were in effect across the remainder of Orange County's coastline, and Laguna Beach plans to hold its annual Fourth of July fireworks show over Monument Point in Heisler Park beginning at 9 p.m. Saturday.
