Merz says Germany finalising response to suspected Leipzig attack
Merz said Berlin is nearing a response as investigators conclude their review and officials weigh sanctions coordinated with European Union and NATO partners.
On Sunday, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced Berlin is preparing a coordinated response with European Union and NATO partners to the August 4 drone attack on a Ukrainian cargo plane in Leipzig.
An explosives-laden drone discovered near a Ukrainian Antonov cargo aircraft at Leipzig/Halle airport on August 4 prompted the investigation that Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt called a "hybrid attack scenario."
The daily Die Welt reported Saturday that the German government intends to blame Russia for the incident and will announce measures including sanctions coordinated with European Union partners.
Merz stated investigators are "in the process of concluding" the investigation, and the government will clarify its response course in the coming days.
Final agreement is due within the next few days with NATO and European Union partners, ensuring Berlin's response carries collective diplomatic weight.
The Government of Friedrich Merz is preparing new measures against Russia and may call on the EU to tighten sanctions after the drone incident at the airport.
