18 Inches Of Snow Now Possible As Winter Storm Warning Issued In PA

A nor'easter may bring 10 to 18 inches of heavy, wet snow with gusts up to 40 mph, causing hazardous travel and possible power outages, officials warned.

  • On Saturday, the National Weather Service issued winter storm warnings for Cambria and Somerset counties, valid from Sunday 1 a.m. until Tuesday 1 a.m., with alerts released at 1:43 p.m. and 1:54 p.m.
  • AccuWeather meteorologists say the system will move northward from the Gulf Coast and strengthen rapidly offshore, possibly becoming a bomb cyclone as precipitation changes from rain to snow Sunday night.
  • Forecasts cite total snow accumulations between 8 and 16 inches, with gusts up to 45 mph and snowfall rates exceeding 1 inch per hour, the NWS says.
  • The NWS warned travel could be very difficult to impossible, and hazardous conditions might impact Monday commutes as strong winds and snow could down power lines.
  • State transport agencies and the NWS emphasize preparing vehicles and following winter driving guidance, urging drivers and residents to delay travel, carry emergency supplies, and heed safety warnings.
