Colombia: 13 Dead in Illegal Gold Mine Collapse
Authorities said improper extraction undermined the mine’s base, and rescue crews found all missing workers by Thursday morning.
On Wednesday night, a landslide at an illegal gold mine in Policarpa, Narino, Colombia, killed at least 13 people and injured 7 others, local authorities confirmed.
A government source told the AFP that the collapse was triggered by "improper extraction" of ore, which undermined the mine's base. Local authorities ruled out an explosion.
Rescue efforts involving firefighters, excavators, and local residents continued until about 2 a.m. on Thursday when Fredy Gamez, government secretary for Narino, confirmed all missing people were located.
Accidents at unregulated Colombian mines are common, often caused by gas explosions. Nineteen people were recently injured in a similar incident at a gold mine in Marmato, Caldas.
The incident occurs as Colombia works to recover from a 7.4 magnitude earthquake that struck on Aug 10. The death toll has reached 319, according to the National Unit.
