Colombia: 13 Dead in Illegal Gold Mine Collapse

Authorities said improper extraction undermined the mine’s base, and rescue crews found all missing workers by Thursday morning.

  • On Wednesday night, a landslide at an illegal gold mine in Policarpa, Narino, Colombia, killed at least 13 people and injured 7 others, local authorities confirmed.
  • A government source told the AFP that the collapse was triggered by "improper extraction" of ore, which undermined the mine's base. Local authorities ruled out an explosion.
  • Rescue efforts involving firefighters, excavators, and local residents continued until about 2 a.m. on Thursday when Fredy Gamez, government secretary for Narino, confirmed all missing people were located.
  • Accidents at unregulated Colombian mines are common, often caused by gas explosions. Nineteen people were recently injured in a similar incident at a gold mine in Marmato, Caldas.
  • The incident occurs as Colombia works to recover from a 7.4 magnitude earthquake that struck on Aug 10. The death toll has reached 319, according to the National Unit.
