112 schools closed or shut early due to heatwave today - full updated list
Schools are moving to remote learning, early pick-ups and shorter days as temperatures rise above 30C, officials said.
Hundreds of schools across England and Wales are closing early or moving to remote learning this week as a rare red 'danger to life' extreme heat warning forces widespread operational changes.
The Met Office issued the rare red extreme heat warning through Thursday, June 25, forecasting temperatures reaching nearly 40C, which would surpass the 1976 June record of 35.6C set in Hampshire.
Data indicates at least 112 schools in Oxfordshire, 100 in Somerset, and 86 in Gloucestershire are implementing closures, while Cheam High School in Sutton is running compressed days for its around 2,000 pupils.
Headteachers are making final decisions based on local assessments of staff availability and site safety, despite The Department for Education advising schools should generally remain open.
Most schools plan to resume normal operations by Friday, June 26, though families should continue monitoring individual school websites and council updates for any changes at short notice.
