10 years later: Remembering the 49 lives lost in the Pulse nightclub shooting
The city plans a permanent memorial as officials and families mark 49 deaths, 53 injuries and a decade of remembrance.
On Friday, June 12, 2026, Orlando marks 10 years since the Pulse Nightclub shooting, one of the deadliest in U.S. history, as the city hosts collaborative remembrance events honoring the 49 victims.
A gunman entered the club on June 12, 2016, murdering 49 people and wounding 58 others; law enforcement killed the shooter after he barricaded himself inside, having pledged allegiance to the Islamic State group.
Citywide events include the annual 4.9k CommUNITY Rainbow Run and an art exhibition at the Terrace Gallery showcasing 49 portraits hand-painted by victims' families to honor the 49 Angels.
Design renderings for the permanent Pulse Memorial are 60% complete, with construction set to begin in September 2026 and an opening slated for 2027 after the City demolished the nightclub building in March.
Local officials emphasized that ten years have not dulled the city's commitment to remembering victims, with the Pulse Memorial Site remaining illuminated nightly as a visual tribute to resilience and enduring unity.
