11-Year-Old Boy Killed, 4 Critically Injured in Bronx E-Bike Battery Fire
Investigators said an e-bike battery sparked the blaze, and five family members were rescued as FDNY warned again about substandard lithium-ion batteries.
Early Wednesday, a lithium-ion battery fire at the Patterson Houses in the South Bronx killed an 11-year-old boy and critically injured four family members, with FDNY crews responding to the 11th-floor blaze shortly before 1 a.m.
Investigators found the e-bike blocked the apartment's exit door, trapping residents inside. Fire Commissioner Lillian Bonsignore stated the device "was placed in the pathway of the exit door," making escape impossible.
Lithium-Ion batteries have caused more than 400 fires across New York City this year, resulting in 74 injuries and six deaths, compared to 292 fires last year.
At a press conference Wednesday, Mayor Zohran Mamdani offered condolences and confirmed victims remain hospitalized in critical condition at Jacobi, Lincoln, and Harlem hospitals, noting further reforms will be considered.
New York City Housing Authority CEO Lisa Bova-Hiatt reiterated rules requiring residents keep bikes away from exits and remain "present and awake while the battery is charging," while officials urged New Yorkers to only use certified batteries.
