License Plate Reader Leads to Arrest After 2 Boys Hit, 1 Killed in Hit-and-Run
Police say the 9-year-old died after a vehicle struck two children and fled, while the 6-year-old remains in stable condition.
On Sunday afternoon, a 9-year-old boy named Roland McLain III died after being struck by a vehicle in the 6700 block of Eagle Pointe Drive North in Indianapolis, while a 5-year-old boy was also injured in the collision.
The driver fled the scene, prompting the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department to review neighborhood surveillance footage and employ automated license plate reader technology to identify the vehicle.
Less than three hours later, Lawrence Police located the suspect's vehicle in the 10300 block of Pendleton Pike and took the driver into custody on preliminary charges of leaving the scene of an accident.
Indianapolis City-County Council President Maggie A. Lewis said she was "heartbroken by this devastating loss," while confirming the 5-year-old remains hospitalized in stable condition.
While prosecutors determine final charges against the suspect, police continue investigating the incident and ask anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers to assist the ongoing case.
