Police said the 16-year-old former student opened fire in a special needs classroom, killing four people before a bystander stopped him.
On Thursday, October 15, 2026, 16-year-old John Griffin Jr. III attacked Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, killing three children aged 5, 8, and 11 and one teacher before an armed bystander fatally shot him.
Kaylub Giamanco, a 36-year-old carpenter and father, heard gunfire while driving home, pursued the gunman into the school, and killed him. Oregon Governor Tina Kotek credited Giamanco with having "heroically intervened to stop further loss of life."
Law enforcement sources said the pump-action shotgun was purchased by Griffin's mother around August. Oregon law generally prohibits minors from possessing firearms, though exceptions exist for certain lawful uses.
Five-Year-Old Rhoam Summer was identified as one of the four victims mourned by families and residents. A 7-year-old child and another teacher remain hospitalized with critical injuries from the shooting.
Police Chief Mike Krantz said the investigation into the motive and the shooter's access to the weapon will take time. Authorities have not announced charges against family members and maintain a heavy police presence at the school.
Three children and a teacher were killed in Thursday's school shooting in Oregon. Another teacher struggled to take the gun from the gunman before a father of two students shot and killed him.
