Massive earthquake strikes Panama at magnitude 7.6, tsunami threat issued

  • On Saturday, a powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Panama, collapsing buildings and roads while sparing the critical Panama Canal. The shallow tremor was felt across the nation of around 4.5 million people, according to the National Civil Protection System.
  • President Jose Raul Mulino declared a "major disaster" after the tremor struck at about 5am with an epicenter 10 kilometres from Pitaloza Arriba in Herrera province. Emergency responders began searching for people trapped in collapsed structures.
  • Rescue teams are searching for residents trapped in collapsed structures, including a church in Veraguas and a hotel in Cocle. Resident Salomon Andion, 46, evacuated his 15-story building and told AFP, "I was scared because the shaking was very strong and prolonged."
  • United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio said he is "closely monitoring" the situation, with his office "rapidly mobilising resources and personnel to assist" at the Panamanian government's request.
  • The Panama earthquake marks at least the fourth quake surpassing 7.0 in magnitude in Latin America this year, following back-to-back tremors in Venezuela's Guaira in June and a powerful earthquake in western Colombia in August.

The strength of the earthquake before Panama is high and then experts even warn of a possible tsunami. Fortunately, it does not happen. And the damage caused by the earthquake itself is also manageable.
