ICE paid private prison firm $495M for Appleton site that had been offered to state for $75M

ICE paid $495.6 million in August for the vacant Prairie Correctional Facility in Appleton, Minnesota, after CoreCivic had offered the same 1,600-bed prison to the state for $75 million in May 2025. Minnesota officials said staffing and housing needs made it impractical, and Attorney General Keith Ellison is urging Congress to investigate the sale.
