ZZ Top drummer Frank Beard dies at 77
The longtime ZZ Top drummer had been in hospice care after stepping away from touring because of an unspecified health issue, the band said.
Frank Beard, the longtime drummer for legendary rock band ZZ Top, died Monday at his ranch in Richmond, Texas, while in hospice care, according to a statement from the band's publicist.
Joining the band in 1969, Beard helped form the legendary trio with vocalist-guitarist Billy Gibbons and bassist Dusty Hill, maintaining an unchanged lineup for more than 50 years.
During his tenure, Beard played on 15 studio albums selling more than 25 million records in the U.S. alone, including signature hits 'La Grange,' 'Tush,' 'Sharp Dressed Man,' and 'Legs.'
His passing follows the band's cancellation of a Hollywood Bowl concert this month as health issues forced Beard to step away from his 56-year tenure with the group.
Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004, Beard remained with the group for six decades, with founder Gibbons calling him a 'naturally innovative drummer.
Musician Frank Beard, a key piece of the ZZ Top sound for six decades, died at the age of 77 accompanied by his family; the band will continue without him.
