Zelenskiy Says Ukraine Expects Meeting with US Negotiators in Coming Days
Ukraine expects substantive talks with the U.S. envoys as tentative dates are set for their first visit, Zelensky said.
- President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on Sept. 3 that President Donald Trump's envoys, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, are expected to visit Kyiv in the coming days. "We expect the meeting to take place in the coming days," Zelensky said.
- Previously scheduled for earlier this month, the visit was postponed, allegedly because Trump wanted to keep the diplomats close due to the unresolved standoff with Iran. Witkoff and Kushner have already made multiple trips to Moscow to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin.
- Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent recently met Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov in the United States to discuss a 28-point peace plan. A Ukrainian official told the Kyiv Independent that Ukraine does not "know anything" about the treasury chief's meeting.
- Zelensky stated that the Ukrainian side is preparing for the meetings and emphasizes that it is important for the U.S. to remain active. The government is ready for substantive discussions at the appropriate level in Ukraine.
- According to Zelensky, the U.S. envoys plan another visit to Moscow following the Kyiv meetings. Negotiations remain deadlocked after the Kremlin rejected revisions to the original 28-point proposal brokered by Witkoff and Russian Envoy Kirill Dmitriev.
