HomePod 27.2 Adds Sound Glow to Existing HomePod Models
The feature adds animated color effects tied to album artwork and requires software update 27.2, Apple said.
- Apple is introducing Sound Glow for the HomePod mini and second-generation HomePod, a feature that pulses the device's top with colors reflecting album artwork from currently playing music or podcasts.
- Included in Software 27.2, the feature also accompanies a new Lock Controls capability that disables touch interactions. The update is currently available as a release candidate for developers and public beta testers, launching next week.
- Sound Glow draws colors from album artwork, displaying animated effects as colored balls bounce across the touch surface. Users can enable it through the Home app by long-pressing on a HomePod and scrolling to settings.
- Users can toggle the feature via Control Center when HomePods are paired with an Apple TV. Software 27.2 also enables HomePods to serve as the default speaker for a Mac.
- Only the original HomePod is excluded from the update; the screen brightness is subtle but creates a visible color cast in dark rooms when positioned against a white wall.
