Young stars are thrown into fame and riches. But the spotlight can be deadly

Panettiere’s death underscores how addiction, anxiety and postpartum depression can intensify under public scrutiny and career pressure, according to her memoir and recent interviews.

Child stardom is not the path to difficulty, addiction and, in some cases, death. But it is true to say that the machinery of fame tends to leave children – at least those without clear, supportive management – vulnerable to exploitation, anxiety and risk.
