After Being Released by Mets, Right-Hander Paul Blackburn Signs with Yankees
Paul Blackburn, 31, joins Yankees' bullpen after Mets released him to clear roster space; he has a 6.85 ERA this season but past MLB success including a 2022 All-Star selection.
- On Thursday, the New York Yankees signed veteran right-handed pitcher Paul Blackburn days after the Mets released him, and optioned right-hander Allan Winans to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to clear a roster spot.
- The Mets designated Blackburn on Aug. 16 and released him three days later after he declined an outright assignment and cleared waivers Monday, following a 6.85 ERA in 23.2 innings this season.
- From July 22nd to August 8th, Blackburn made four rehab appearances lasting at least five innings without allowing more than two earned runs, and on August 13th he threw five innings of long relief allowing two earned runs.
- The signing gives the Yankees bullpen "Some depth, some length," manager Aaron Boone said, and financially, the club will only pay Blackburn the prorated league minimum while the New York Mets cover most of his salary.
- With relievers nearing returns, Blackburn was delayed by extensive flight issues and arrived early Thursday after missing the Yankees' Wednesday game in Tampa.
