Xbox Ally X gets its own DLSS-rivaling frame upscaling tech, among other updates
Xbox Insiders get a preview of Auto SR, which Microsoft says can improve 1440p performance by about 30% on supported titles.
- On Friday, Microsoft released Automatic Super Resolution for the ROG Xbox Ally X as an Xbox Insiders preview, enabling docked gaming to offer "1440p-like detail alongside smooth framerates on larger screens," according to Xbox.
- Because the device often struggles with 1440p resolution on TVs, Auto SR utilizes the ROG Xbox Ally X's NPU to upscale games at the driver level, working with any DirectX 11 or DirectX 12 title without requiring per-game developer implementation.
- Per early GDC 2026 demos, the technology can improve performance by about 30% on supported titles, and while the company notes some latency is introduced, the NPU-based model remains more memory-efficient than GPU-based upscalers.
- Docking enhancements also arrive today, including auto-disabling the handheld display when connected to TVs and an Enhanced Vibration feature, providing a console-like experience when using the ROG Bulwark Dock or ROG 100 Charger Dock.
- It is exploring Auto SR for handheld mode, which could benefit games running poorly at 1080p, while a new Collective Library update allows users to launch games from Steam, Epic, and other stores within a single interface.
