Wyoming Student Test Scores Uniformly Reach or Exceed Prepandemic Levels for First Time
State officials credited literacy reform and teacher support as 75% of schools met or exceeded achievement standards, according to the education department.
On Friday, Wyoming Superintendent of Public Education Megan Degenfelder announced that statewide test scores have rebounded to prepandemic levels across science, math, and English language arts for the first time.
Six years after the COVID-19 pandemic upended education and caused nationwide learning loss, students showed progress under Wyoming's statewide accountability system established a decade ago.
For the 2025-26 school year, 75% of schools serving grades 3-8 met or exceeded achievement standards, a 5% gain. Proficiency reached 57.3% in English language arts, 54.9% in math, and 52.5% in science.
Washakie School District 2 achieved 70% or better proficiency across all three content areas, while Carey Middle School in Cheyenne jumped two categories after implementing what Principal Matt Schlagel called a "redesign" to meet student needs.
Degenfelder credited a "laser-focused" effort involving policymakers, teachers, and families for the gains. "These results show us that our statewide priority around literacy reform and efforts to raise the bar are working," she said.
