'Bringing Family Home': Butte Welcomes Home Pvt. Harry Bordner, POW Who Died in WWII
The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency identified his remains after more than 80 years, and full military honors are planned for the funeral.
- On Wednesday, April 15, the remains of Army Private Henry 'Harry' Bordner returned to Butte, Montana, after more than 80 years. A funeral service is scheduled for today, Friday, April 17, at St. Anne's Catholic Church, followed by burial with full military honors at Mountain View Cemetery.
- Bordner, a 1937 Butte High School graduate, died at age 24 in a Japanese prisoner of war camp in 1942 after surviving the Bataan Death March. The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency identified his remains on October 7, 2025.
- Crowds lined Airport Road Wednesday as a Montana National Guard C-130 landed at Bert Mooney Airport carrying his remains. Captain Jacqueline Fogerty, public affairs chief for the 120th Air National Guard, said, 'We are bringing family home.'
- Local fire departments and the United Veterans Council Honor Guard paid respects during the dignified transfer at the airport. Tom Goyette of the Council said the honor guard presence demonstrates the importance of bringing veterans home.
- This return provides closure for the Butte community after decades of absence. Captain Fogerty emphasized that honoring veterans remains a priority regardless of time passed since their service overseas.
