Boston, MBTA Announce Plans for Summer Street Closures During World Cup Games
The deal limits full shutdowns to four matches and gives the MBTA authority for partial closures during the rest of the tournament.
On Tuesday, Boston Mayor Michelle Wu's administration and the MBTA agreed to a plan managing Summer Street traffic during the FIFA World Cup, ending a weeks-long standoff over the busy downtown transit hub.
Previously, the MBTA threatened to use eminent domain to close the street for all seven local matches, prompting Boston officials to argue the move bypassed necessary permitting processes.
Summer Street will close fully for eight hours during four matches—June 13, June 19, June 29, and July 9—while partial westbound access remains for the other three tournament dates.
MBTA General Manager Phillip Eng confirmed the agency will withdraw its eminent domain letter, while Boston will issue occupancy permits to support train transit for up to 20,000 passengers per match.
Governor Maura Healey is proposing extended 3 a.m. last call hours for bars and restaurants, with the MBTA planning to adjust service times to support the expected influx of fans.
