World's Top-Ranked Racehorse Ombudsman Beaten Into 4th in Juddmonte International Won by Item
Item surged late to win by a head, giving trainer Andrew Balding a first Juddmonte International title while favorite Ombudsman finished fourth.
On Wednesday, three-year-old Item won the Juddmonte International Stakes at York Racecourse, claiming the £850,000 prize ridden by Colin Keane in a stunning upset.
Heavy rain softened the ground, hampering world-ranked favorite Ombudsman, who finished fourth despite never finishing outside the top two in 12 previous starts for Godolphin.
Item lunged dramatically in the final 50 metres to defeat runner-up Almaqam by a head. Trainer Andrew Balding noted the winner is a son of Frankel, who won this race in 2012.
Balding called the victory "lovely," marking his first win in the historic event, and noted the colt "kept improving and improved physically" since the Dante.
Regarding Item's next assignment, Balding said connections are undecided, stating "I just do not know at this moment in time" and plan to "sit down and let the dust settle.
