Australia launches world’s largest electric ship by Tasmanian shipbuilder Incat

  • On May 2, 2025, Australian shipbuilder Incat launched Hull 096, the world’s largest battery-electric ferry, on Hobart’s Derwent River in Tasmania.
  • Originally intended to run on liquefied natural gas, Hull 096 was redesigned to operate fully on battery power to reduce maritime emissions.
  • The 130-meter aluminium catamaran, built for South American operator Buquebus, will carry 2,100 passengers and 225 vehicles across the Río de la Plata between Buenos Aires and Uruguay.
  • Hull 096 features an energy storage system containing more than 250 tonnes of battery weight and exceeds 40 megawatt-hours in capacity—making it four times larger than any prior maritime setup—and powers eight electrically driven waterjets.
  • The launch marks a milestone in sustainable shipping, demonstrating that large-scale low-emission ferries are ready now and setting a global benchmark for clean maritime transport.
