World junior champs Kemp, Elizarov start road to 2030 Olympics at Skate Canada
The pair are chasing experience and qualification points as they begin the Grand Prix season after becoming Canada’s first world junior pairs champions in 48 years.
On Friday, 18-year-old Ava Kemp and 22-year-old Yohnatan Elizarov make their senior Grand Prix debut at Skate Canada International in Kelowna, B.C., treating the event as their first step toward the 2030 Olympics.
Following a 2021 tryout in Regina, Saskatchewan, the pair trained under coach Kevin Dawe before relocating to Toronto's Granite Club in 2023 to advance their competitive development.
After winning their first senior international gold earlier this month at the Tayside Trophy in Dundee, Scotland, the skaters aim to build momentum, having previously become Canada's first world junior pairs champions in 48 years in Estonia.
Despite challenges including Elizarov's 2023 lung surgery and Kemp's recurring injuries, the pair has consistently leveled up; Elizarov credits their success to Kemp's intense focus and determination.
Scheduled to compete at Skate America in Everett, Washington, in mid-November, the skaters continue their progression toward the 2030 Winter Games by bridging the gap to top senior teams.
