Boxing-Gassiev to Fight Kadiru in Moscow for WBA Heavyweight Title
Tony Yoka withdrew with a back injury, giving unranked Peter Kadiru a surprise title shot against Gassiev, organisers said.
- On July 11, Murat Gassiev, WBA heavyweight champion, will defend his WBA World Heavyweight Title against Peter Kadiru, German challenger, in Moscow at the VTB Arena.
- Tony Yoka, French heavyweight, withdrew from the scheduled bout due to a back injury, prompting Kadiru to step in on short notice for the biggest fight of his career.
- Boasting 23 wins and one defeat, Kadiru enters the bout unranked in the WBA top 15 and remains absent from the WBC, IBF, and WBO rankings.
- Gassiev secured the WBA Regular title last December after defeating Kubrat Pulev from Bulgaria, stepping up after Oleksandr Usyk, 'super champion', relinquished his unified belts and fragmented the division.
- 'I intend to keep the WBA World Heavyweight Title in Russia,' Gassiev said. He noted that boxing is unpredictable and champions must adapt to new opponents.
