With 500-plus structures damaged or lost, B.C.'s fire season is among the worst
Officials say more than 500 homes and other structures have been damaged or destroyed as wildfires continue to spread across the province.
Wildfires in British Columbia have destroyed or damaged more than 500 homes or other structures this year, marking devastation comparable to some of the worst recent fire seasons.
THE BRADLEY COMPLEX destroyed about 230 homes on Okanagan Indian Band land when it swept through on Aug. 1, while the out-of-control Bald Range fire damaged or destroyed about 150 properties near Summerland and Faulder.
Outside Clinton, THE BIG BAR COMPLEX The Thompson-Nicola Regional District destroyed structures on about 120 properties with the massive 1,600-square-kilometre Pear Lake fire still burning out of control.
An 80-year-old woman died while evacuating near Meadow Valley, marking the only known fatality this year; by comparison, about 600 structures were destroyed in 2023 and 509 in 2017.
Across British Columbia, more than 1,000 fires have burned 4,300 square kilometres this year, with structural losses mounting despite the total area burned remaining lower than the record 2023 season.
