Wine giant Gallo closing Napa Valley facility, laying off dozens of workers
Gallo is closing The Ranch Winery and cutting nearly 100 jobs as it consolidates operations due to changing market demand and declining U.S. alcohol consumption, a survey found.
- On Feb. 12, Gallo filed a WARN notice announcing the closure of The Ranch Winery in St. Helena and the elimination of 56 jobs, with a total of 93 layoffs scheduled by April 15.
- Amid consolidation of some operations in recent years, Gallo said the changes are driven by market dynamics, evolving consumer demand and available capacity across wineries, aligning with its long-term business strategy.
- State WARN filings show 73 cuts at three St. Helena sites and 20 in Healdsburg, affecting Louis M. Martini Winery, Orin Swift Tasting Room, J Vineyards & Winery and Frei Ranch in winemaking, hospitality and culinary departments.
- Gallo said affected employees will be offered personalized support, transition packages, and opportunities to explore other roles, while a spokesperson added the cuts `do not materially impact` tasting rooms in Napa, Sonoma and San Luis Obispo counties.
- Amid a broader industry slump, Gallo's cuts continue recent consolidation after two years of falling sales, grape oversupply and prior closures including Courtside Winery in Sept. 2025 that cut 47 jobs.
