College Football Player Dies Following Medical Emergency
A campus vigil is planned as the college and Liberty community grieve the junior running back’s sudden death.
- On Saturday, William Jewell College junior running back MicahJo Barnett died after collapsing on the sidelines during the season opener against Fort Lewis College, prompting immediate postponement of the game.
- A Liberty, Missouri, native, Barnett was a standout at Liberty North High School, where he helped lead the team to a state championship before entering his third season with the Cardinals.
- With the Cardinals leading 7-0, Barnett had recorded six carries for 30 yards and scored a 1-yard rushing touchdown before play was suspended with 4:32 remaining in the first quarter.
- William Jewell Athletics scheduled a vigil for 8 p.m. Saturday to honor Barnett, while Fort Lewis College Director of Athletics Shawn Jakubowski extended 'deepest condolences' to the community.
- Counseling services and the chaplain's office are available for students and staff coping with the loss, and the team is not scheduled to play again until Sept. 12 at Kentucky Wesleyan College.
