Wildwood Ecoforest looks to community to help ‘burn the mortgage’
The campaign was extended through October after a donor offered to match gifts up to $10,000, with about $334,000 still owed.
The Ecoforestry Institute launched its 'Burn the Mortgage' campaign to pay down debt on Wildwood, the ecoforest it purchased in 2016 following a Supreme Court decision granting stewardship rights.
Merv Wilkinson purchased Wildwood near Ladysmith in 1938 and began practicing ecoforestry in 1945; The Land Conservancy's decision to sell the property in the mid-2010s created uncertainty about its future.
According to EIS board director Kathy Code, approximately $4,000 has been raised toward a matching goal after a donor offered to match contributions up to $10,000.
EIS aims to use funds for expanded educational programming and a value-added wood processing centre. Code said, 'Getting rid of the mortgage, even if it's just bit by bit, would be a really significant help.'
Public tours of Wildwood occur on the third Sunday of each month, and the restored homestead accommodates up to six people, positioning the property as an active community resource.
