Wildfires Merge North of Clinton, B.C., Evacuation Order Planned for 70 Mile House
The combined Pear Lake and Fiftynine Creek fires are still out of control as crews protect structures and repair Highway 97 damage.
- On Sunday, the BC Wildfire Service combined the Pear Lake and Fiftynine Creek wildfires near Clinton into a single blaze spanning nearly 670 square kilometres as part of the Big Bar complex.
- The Pear Lake fire surged Friday, destroying homes and structures on the outskirts of Clinton. Local business owner Steve Larabie reported losing everything, including two homes, as fuel tanks at his business ignited.
- Fire information officer Shae Stearns said crews are actively protecting structures in Clinton, noting "significant progress has been made." The blaze crossed Highway 97, forcing an indefinite closure.
- The Thompson-Nicola Regional District issued an evacuation order for 70 Mile House effective 10 a.m. Monday. Emergency Support Services will provide temporary accommodation and basic needs for affected residents.
- Across British Columbia, there were 31 evacuation orders and 28 alerts on Sunday, with crews battling about 140 active blazes. Drought conditions throughout the province limit rainfall and increase the risk of new ignitions.
