Why Red Sox Traded Lefty Reliever Eduardo Rivera to Cardinals
Boston cleared a 40-man roster spot by moving the 23-year-old lefty, who posted a 6.30 ERA in four MLB appearances, to St. Louis.
On Monday, the Boston Red Sox designated right-handed reliever Zack Kelly and left-handed pitcher Eduardo Rivera for assignment to clear 40-man roster space. By Tuesday, the St. Louis Cardinals acquired Rivera from Boston in exchange for minor league pitcher Juan Garcia.
To accommodate five players returning from the 60-day injured list, Boston activated Kutter Crawford, Johan Oviedo, Justin Slaten, Triston Casas, and Eli White. The Red Sox faced a strict deadline following the World Series to finalize the 40-man roster.
Kelly, a 31-year-old reliever, logged a 4.04 ERA over 115 appearances since his 2022 debut, while 23-year-old Rivera posted a 6.30 ERA in his limited 2026 MLB action. Both battled significant injuries including elbow inflammation and lumbar strains during their Red Sox tenures.
While the Cardinals promptly acquired Rivera, Kelly remains designated for assignment, giving the Red Sox seven days to trade, release, or waive the right-hander. Other clubs are expected to express interest in the veteran reliever, who is arbitration-eligible for the first time next year.
The Red Sox must clear additional roster spots before the November 17 deadline to protect prospects from the Rule 5 Draft. Arbitration-eligible player decisions are scheduled for November 20 as Boston continues reshaping its roster for the 2027 season.
The Boston Red Sox appointed Puerto Rican left-handed Eduardo Rivera for assignment, a decision that opens up the possibility of a change of organization months after his major league debut.
