Right-Hander Garrett Whitlock's $8.25 Million Exercised by Red Sox
The right-hander gets $8.25 million for 2027 after a 1.72 ERA season, and Boston keeps control through 2028.
The Boston Red Sox exercised their $8.25 million club option on right-handed reliever Garrett Whitlock for the 2027 season on Sunday, locking in the 30-year-old pitcher for next year.
Serving as the setup man for veteran closer Aroldis Chapman, Whitlock posted a career-best 1.72 ERA over 54 games in 2026 with 59 strikeouts and nine walks in 52 1/3 innings.
Despite his dominance, Whitlock unknowingly pitched through a fractured tibia late in the season; the injury was diagnosed after the Red Sox were eliminated from the postseason.
Boston avoids a $1 million buyout by exercising the option and retains control through 2028, when the club holds a $10.5 million option with a $500,000 buyout.
Team officials expect Whitlock to be ready for spring training after six weeks in a walking boot, securing a key piece of the bullpen that led baseball in ERA in 2026.
