Why is wildfire smoke so unhealthy?

Depending on how hot the fire is and what's burning — trees, grasslands, or buildings — wildfire smoke can contain toxic chemical substances, including carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, benzene and metals.
