Man Comes Down From DC’s Frederick Douglass Bridge Wednesday, Ending 6-Day Protest
The protester said he was on a hunger strike and had run out of water as police negotiators stayed on scene.
On Wednesday, May 6, 2026, activist Guido Reichstadter descended from the 168-foot Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge, ending his 6-day protest. D.C. Fire and EMS brought him to safety by 9:30 a.m.
Reichstadter scaled the structure on Friday, May 1, to oppose the war in Iran and the advancement of artificial intelligence . He claimed these issues pose catastrophic risks to humanity, including potential extinction.
During his occupation, Reichstadter lived in a tent atop the bridge, causing periodic traffic closures. Washington police and first responders managed the scene throughout the dayslong standoff, briefly closing lanes Wednesday morning.
Authorities have not confirmed specific charges, though Reichstadter stated on social media he expected to be arrested. He has a history of similar protests, including a 2022 demonstration against the Supreme Court's Roe v. Wade decision.
California protests, including a 30-day hunger strike, previously resulted in legal repercussions for Reichstadter. He advocates for nonviolent direct action to compel global governments to address his concerns regarding AI and warfare.
