Wholesale prices rose 0.4% in August, as expected
Diesel fuel drove most of the monthly gain, while annual wholesale inflation rose to 5.4%, keeping pressure on the Federal Reserve ahead of its policy meeting.
On Thursday, September 10, 2026, the Labor Department reported the producer price index rose 0.4% in August, pushing annual wholesale inflation to 5.4%, the highest 12-month reading this year.
Renewed fighting in the Middle East pushed global oil prices above $100 a barrel, with this disruption linked to the ongoing conflict with Iran driving energy costs higher.
Wholesale diesel fuel prices surged 24.1% in August alone, accounting for more than one-third of the total monthly advance in goods prices and directly raising transportation and manufacturing costs.
These figures face intense scrutiny as the Federal Reserve prepares for its policy meeting next week; Natixis CIB Americas chief economist Christopher Hodge said if inflation comes in hotter than consensus, a hike becomes more likely.
Markets now focus on the upcoming Consumer Price Index report for further inflation clarity, while the Bureau of Economic Analysis will release August PCE data on September 30 to guide future policy decisions.
