The new pope had only been a cardinal for a relatively short time, which put him on the sidelines of discussions about favorites. During his time in Peru, he demonstrated his ability to be a respected mediator between liberation theology supporters and the ultra-traditionalist faction, as well as amidst differences of opinion among the Peruvian bishops.
