WHO chief hails 5 Ebola recoveries as a new treatment center opens in eastern Congo
WHO said five patients recovered as officials opened a new treatment center and warned the outbreak has spread faster than the response.
On Sunday, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus announced five Ebola recoveries during the opening of a new treatment center in Bunia, Ituri, with four patients discharged that day.
The outbreak involves the Bundibugyo virus, a rare Ebola strain currently lacking approved vaccines or treatments, with official figures showing 906 suspected cases and 223 suspected deaths.
Doctors Without Borders, or MSF, reported Saturday the virus spreads faster than the response, hindered by regional conflict and attacks on health centers that clash with local burial rites.
Pierre Akilimali, Incident Manager at Congo's National Institute of Public Health, stated during Sunday's inauguration that symptomatic treatment is helping patients recover, offering hope for controlling the outbreak.
Tedros stressed that community involvement is vital, stating, "We can stop this Ebola and anyone who has it can also recover," while urging citizens to come forward early for support.
