When the next solar eclipse is and how much of the Sun will be covered from UK
More than 90% of the Sun was obscured after 7pm, and the next UK-visible partial eclipse is due in August 2027.
The United Kingdom experienced a partial solar eclipse on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, visible over Liverpool Bay from Crosby Beach in Liverpool.
A partial solar eclipse occurs when the Moon aligns between the Earth and the Sun, blocking a portion of the Sun's light and casting a shadow on Earth.
The eclipse reached its maximum after 7pm, with more than 90% of the Sun obscured by the Moon. BBC Sky and Night Magazine reported the Scilly Isles saw 48%, while the Shetland Isles saw 13%.
People used indirect viewing methods like pinhole projectors or certified ISO eclipse glasses to safely observe the event. Experts warn that reduced brightness can override natural reflexes, allowing intense sunlight to damage the retina.
The next solar eclipse visible from the British Isles will occur on August 2, 2027, as a partial event. A total eclipse will not arrive until 2090, though September 2081 will see up to 99% coverage.
