Inflation, Gas Prices and Slowing Jobs Shape Voter View of U.S. Economy
Survey data show inflation, gas costs and slower hiring are weighing on household budgets and keeping consumer sentiment near record lows.
On Thursday, the Commerce Department reported the economy grew at an annualized rate of 3.4% over the three months ending in September, continuing expansion despite disruptions from the war with Iran.
The war with Iran sparked inflation, squeezing household budgets as prices rose 3.7% in September, while regular gas averages $4.22 a gallon and diesel $6.33, according to AAA.
In the latest ABC News/Washington Post/Ipsos poll, a 71% majority called gasoline "unaffordable," while consumer sentiment stands at the second-lowest level in the 74-year history of the University of Michigan survey.
While the labor market remains resilient, job gains have fluctuated; employers added 29,000 jobs in September, down from 133,000 in August, according to BLS data.
Addressing a rally in Corinth, Miss., President Donald Trump claimed the economy is experiencing "unbelievable growth, the biggest growth in the history of our country" as midterm elections near on Nov 3.
