What red, purple, black and white poppies mean on Remembrance Day
Red, purple, black and white poppies each mark different forms of remembrance, from military dead to animals and pacifist causes.
Various poppy colors carry distinct meanings during the Remembrance period, honoring those impacted by conflict. While red is most recognized, purple, black, and white versions also hold specific significance.
The red poppy tradition stems from fields where battles occurred, inspiring Canadian soldier Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae to write the poem "In Flanders Fields." McCrae wrote: "In Flanders fields the poppies blow, between the crosses, row on row."
Purple poppies honor animals that were victims of war, such as horses. Donations to the Animal Purple Poppy Fund support charities including World Horse Welfare and the Household Cavalry Foundation.
The Peace Pledge Union distributes white poppies as a pacifist symbol. The union says these poppies commemorate those who died in conflict while focusing on peace and challenging how war is viewed.
Established by Selena Carty, The BlackPoppyRose aims to showcase "largely untold historical legacies" from the 16th century. It honors contributions from African, Black Peoples, West Indian, Caribbean, Pacific Islands, and Indigenous communities.
