The Key Governor Races to Watch in the 2026 Midterm Election
Open seats in 19 races could reshape state power over budgets, abortion rules and election administration, analysts said.
Thirty-Six U.S. states hold gubernatorial contests this year, with 19 incumbents leaving office and creating significant turnover. These races offer an early reading on national party strength ahead of the 2028 presidential election.
At least 17 former U.S. presidents served as governors before reaching the White House. The Eagleton Institute of Politics estimates, however, only 53 percent of such nominees ultimately won their races.
The Guttmacher Institute noted about a dozen governors issued executive orders to "mitigate" harm from abortion bans by declaring protections for providers and patients. Reproductive rights remain a central area of gubernatorial influence.
Governors also negotiate federal funding and implement programs like Medicaid, a power demonstrated after the Affordable Care Act passed in 2010. They further influence election administration through legislation or official appointments.
California Governor Gavin Newsom, prevented from seeking a third term, is widely speculated to be a frontrunner for the 2028 Democratic nomination, having established himself as a vocal critic of President Donald Trump.
The election of the governors of 36 states of the United States takes on more importance than the administration of local affairs, given the powers of the governors in legislation and budgets and influence the division of electoral districts and the administration of elections.
