US ’28 Track Trials Headed Back to Eugene (Not LA) over Compressed 6-Day Schedule
USA Track & Field said the 2028 meet will use a six-day format, with combined events and the 10,000 meters held earlier for recovery.
The Olympic track and field trials will return to Eugene, Oregon, in 2028, leaving Los Angeles on the sideline weeks before it hosts the Summer Games.
USA Track and Field CEO Max Siegel defended the selection, noting Eugene's "record of success in selecting America's best track and field athletes speaks for itself."
The six-day schedule excludes the decathlon, heptathlon, and 10,000 meters, which will be held earlier in the spring at undetermined locations to allow for additional recovery.
Organizers bypassed Los Angeles venues like the Coliseum and Drake Stadium, citing concerns about holding two major events within a short period.
The Olympics begin July 14, 2028, with the track meet starting the next day; this marks the first time track will cover the opening days of the Games since 1968.
