Welcome to “The Fargo Files”: Nurse shares letters of family vets
Aaron Avery is publishing the letters free online and selling family ephemera to fund the archive.
Enumclaw resident Aaron Avery launched The Fargo Files to share Navy letters from his uncle, Seaman First Class Charles Raymond "Ray" Fenton, who served on the USS Fargo from 1946 through 1948.
Avery saved this dusty box of letters, postcards, and photographs from a landfill after his family acted as custodians for over a century, deciding to preserve these snapshots as primary sources.
Ray, a "homesick and funny" 18-year-old, wrote home from the Mediterranean describing his travels in Italy, Greece, and France on blue-and-gold USS Fargo letterhead.
The Fargo Files will release letters serially starting on Nov. 11, with Avery hoping sharing stories "one piece at a time" encourages other families to preserve their own boxes of history.
Avery will next archive WWII-era correspondence from his uncle Bud and stories of his family in the Humptulips and Grays Harbor timber country, ensuring family records survive.
