Weil Gotshal Leaders Confirm Plan to Wind Down Law Firm
The nearly century-old firm engaged outside restructuring advisers after partner departures, failed merger talks and leadership turmoil, with at least seven management committee members gone.
On Wednesday, Weil Gotshal leaders informed partners the firm will wind down its operations, ending the nearly century-old law firm's practice.
The firm's collapse follows failed merger talks with Willkie Farr and Gallagher, combined with seven management committee members departing since late 2024.
Despite generating nearly $2.1 billion in revenue last year, Weil Gotshal struggled to retain talent as competitors including Simpson Thacher, Bartlett, Paul Weiss, Davis Polk, and Wardwell raided the partnership.
On Tuesday, a practice group leader instructed associates to seek employment elsewhere while remaining on the payroll, signaling immediate operational cessation.
Longtime leader Barry Wolf prepared to relinquish control, but Ramona Nee decided against taking the executive partner role, exacerbating the instability preceding the firm's exit.
