Thompson-Nicola district could see potential ‘dramatic increase’ in wildfire activity
The district said unstable weather could intensify existing large fires and spark new ones, with about 2,361 properties still on evacuation alert.
The Thompson-Nicola Regional District warned Friday that erratic, strong, and shifting winds forecast for this weekend could cause a "dramatic increase" in wildfire activity across the Southern and Central Interior.
Large wildfires including the Ainslie Creek fire at 67,048 hectares and French Bar Creek at 52,828 hectares remain active, with the TNRD maintaining evacuation orders for approximately 118 properties near Clinton.
Additionally, approximately 2,361 properties remain on evacuation alert across the region, while crews continue suppressing fire edges and reinforcing containment lines to limit further growth.
The Resiliency Centre at the Clinton Curling Club remains open daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., providing bottled water, food packages, cleaning supplies, and volunteer assistance for displaced residents.
Officials will reassess evacuation orders and alerts on Monday, August 24, after the current weather system passes, when a return to more stable and seasonal conditions is expected.
