Wayve Raises $1.5 Billion With Uber Partnership to Launch Robotaxis in London
Wayve secured $1.5 billion from major tech firms and automakers to launch supervised Level 4 robotaxi trials with Uber in London and expand to over 10 global markets.
- On Tuesday, London-based autonomous driving technology maker Wayve announced a $1.5 billion raise including a $1.2 billion Series D, valuing the company around $8.6 billion and planning Uber-partnered robotaxi trials in London.
- The funding round was led by Eclipse, Balderton and SoftBank Vision Fund 2 with institutional and automaker participation, while Uber committed up to $300 million in milestone-based capital tied to deployments.
- Wayve says its system uses an end-to-end neural network trained on video and driving data, tested in more than 500 cities, with its Gen 3 platform powered by Nvidia Drive AGX Thor enabling Level 4 features.
- The company said the funding will accelerate Wayve’s path to commercial deployment, while Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said they plan to deploy in more than 10 markets and Liz Kendall, UK Technology Secretary, hailed it as a boost to Britain’s AI sector.
- Competition in London includes Waymo, which plans its own UK rollout and has raised $16b, while the sector still faces technical and regulatory hurdles amid regulators and public safety concerns.
