Waterloo regional councillors unanimously supported a motion opposing the possibility of a mayor also serving as regional chair, after Ontario passed legislation giving it the power to appoint regional chairs. Councillors raised concerns that combining the two roles would concentrate too much power in one person, weaken local democracy and make it difficult for the chair to fairly represent all municipalities across the region.
